5 Weight Loss Tips for 2017

5 Weight Loss Tips to Help Achieve Your 2017 Resolutions

Achieve your 2017 Weight Loss Resolutions: Exercise + Nutrition = Healthier You!

Make 2017 your breakout weight loss year! To help you achieve your resolution, here are 5 tips from fitness and lifestyle professionals that will help you through your weight loss journey.

1. Commit to a Lifestyle Change

Don’t think of your weight loss resolution as a “diet.” Diets don’t work, because they are temporary changes to current habits. Losing weight is a long-term strategy which needs your full commitment. There are no temporary fixes. You will have to look at what is contributing to your current weight gain (e.g. stress, lack of sleep, no exercise, etc.) and change them. It’s not just about the food or the exercise, it’s about re-booting your life and making choices that will make you feel better for the long-term.

2. Set Realistic Goals

Set goals that make sense. Think about your current weight and your ideal goal. Trying to lose too much weight too fast will make achieving your goal that much harder. It probably took you a couple of years to get to the weight you’re currently at, so it will likely take you the same amount of time to lose it. Don’t forget to factor in your lifestyle change commitment. If you only make some minor adjustments, you won’t see dramatic results right away. It will take time.

3. Track your Exercise and Eating Habits and Successes

Keeping an exercise and diet journal. This will help you identify your current habits and what is contributing to your weight gain. As tiresome and annoying as it may be, think of it as tracking how well you’re doing.  At the beginning it will help you identify key elements that are contributing to your weight gain. Then as you start your exercise and lifestyle changes, it’ll help you see your progress and what you need to alter to reach your end goal.

There are some great apps and fitness products out there that make this process easier. Tracking your successes will help motivate you and keep you on track. Check out this article from PC Magazine that rates fitness trackers to see which one is right for you. There are also numerous fitness journal apps available for free that you can take advantage of. A good one is Under Armour’s myfitnesspal.com.

4. Get Your Friends to Help

Having a strong support system will help you through anything, including losing weight. Get your friends, spouse, partner, and family on board and you’ll feel more motivated to do the things you need to do to reach your end goal.  Plus, you’ll be doing them a favour by helping them get healthy too.  It’s a win-win for everyone.

5. Hire a Professional

What do you do if you have a leak in your plumbing, or a leak in your roof? Go on YouTube? Probably, but most of us hire a professional to fix it. Think of losing weight in the same way.  You may know what you need to fix, but you don’t know how to develop the plan to get to your end goal. That’s where hiring someone to help you with your food choices, such as a dietician and someone to help you develop a fitness plan, like a personal trainer can help.  Both can help you understand and identify what you need to do to lose weight, without the risk of injury or loss of motivation. Don’t sell yourself short, if you’re serious about losing the weight for good, invest in yourself!
